- The course is recommended for actors and directors .
- For people that like working as part of a team and like the idea of creating something out of nothing.
Tutor: Kevin Dowsett
This course teaches the skills of improvisation in a down to earth, fun way and introduces the important concept that improvisation lies between the performers. It is therefore alive to the moment.
Beginning with exercises in status, spontaneity and storytelling, Kevin guides the class towards genuinely creative interplay in the performance space. The work of Keith Johnstone provides a background to the work.
Some actors fear improvisation because they worry about what will happen – suppose they can’t think of anything? Kevin provides strategies for actors to rid themselves of this fear and find something inside themselves that is authentic. At least one session will feature masks.
The course is recommended for actors and directors who want to challenge themselves in a new way. Fun and laughter is hoped for but also perhaps there might be sadness and a tear. If you enjoy working as part of a team and like the idea of creating something out of nothing then this is the course for you. It will make you think and perhaps give you a new insight to use in future acting because it encourages freshness and the feeling of being in the moment.
In the past Kevin has given many courses at Gormanston on Brecht, Shakespeare, Comedia dell’arte and Duologues of all theatrical styles and conventions. This is a new course and will suit actors and directors who have worked with Kevin before as well as those who know nothing of him!
