Rowan Tolley’s unique teaching approach, allows the participant to explore the quality of movement and articulation, necessary to make a performers intention clear, simple and precise by examining the relationship between body and space.
Using Classical and Contemporary styles, this course will explore the fundamental techniques of modern physical and illusionary mime, fixed point, resistance, levels, musicality, visual spacing and configuration; as well as rhythm, tempo, control and the predictable unpredictability of creative movement.
Working solo, with a partner and in various group sizes you will, from day one, surround yourself with risk, challenge, truth and silence. Discovering a new gestural language as well as developing the expressive potential of the human body, you will connect with your emotions and play with a forgotten, hidden and new movement based vocabulary.
Discarding and developing ideas/scenes/moments you will begin to express on a deeper and creative level where Silence and Movement support each other in the space. Easily accessible to any age and ability, starting with a warm up, followed by teaching technique and always allowing time at the end of each day for a short performance. Come prepared to sharpen your stage presence, physical language and movement based storytelling skills.
COURSE TUTOR: ROWAN TOLLEY
Rowan Tolley is Yorkshire based and has been classed as one of Britain’s most original and imaginative white-faced Mimes / Physical Theatre practitioners and directors.
Influenced by Chaplin, Keaton, Tati and Beckett, and building on a training of Decroux technique, he studied in London and Paris, creating a style that has been classed as ‘Classical with a touch of the unexpected’.
A Performer, Director, Creator, and Teacher, with over 25 years professional experience, he combines touring his highly acclaimed one-man show with teaching, directing, devising in both theatre and film/television. Increasingly interested in the function of silence, he is a great believer in the element of risk for both performer and director.
